The distinction between “informal” and “formal” tends to have an active influence on the ways in which modern urban planning and policy is employed and, oftentimes, these definitions emerge as a governmental tool. Shown here are five examples of government-initiated favela interventions that have taken place over the years, but it is important to note that these interventions, while some have been quite successful, like Favela Bairro, all deal with visibility on some level.
