Education is a critical element in adequately claiming for your Right to the City. It is necessary to know your rights in order to know whether or not you are receiving them, how to claim for them if you are not receiving them and how to effectively critique their implementation in our communities in in our individual lives.
Brazil has many progressive federal urban policies that have been implemented following the re-democratization as a means of making democracy work, however, Brazil is highly decentralized, leaving Federal Urban Policy to be translated and implemented statewide and municipally. Many Brazilian states have utilized Federal Urban Policy to make their cities a better place for their residents, however, Rio de Janeiro has sidestepped many of these policies in their preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
